Take the Risk. Bet on Yourself.
Twelve years ago, we were given an opportunity that felt bigger than we were ready for — our very first out-of-state volleyball tournament.
At that point, we had never traveled as a business. I was pregnant with our second child and still juggling my corporate job. Everything we had built was local, familiar, safe. Boston felt far away in every sense of the word — geographically, financially, emotionally. It felt like stepping onto a stage we weren’t sure we belonged on.
I remember turning to my husband and saying, “Absolutely not.”
It felt irresponsible. Risky. What if we failed? What if we stretched ourselves too thin? What if we weren’t ready?
He looked at me and said something I’ve never forgotten:
“If you don’t take this opportunity, someone else will. And you may never get the chance again.”
That moment changed everything.
It wasn’t just about a tournament. It was about deciding who we were going to be as a business — and as people. Were we going to stay comfortable? Or were we going to bet on ourselves? Were we going to let fear make the decision? Or courage?
So we said yes.
We rented a 20-foot U-Haul, packed it to the ceiling with merchandise, and drove it ourselves all the way to Boston. Every single box felt like a leap of faith. We didn’t have a big operation. We didn’t have a perfect plan. I was pregnant. We were exhausted. But we had belief. We had grit. And we had each other.
We believed one thing: everything is figure-outable.
If there was a problem, we’d solve it.
If there was a challenge, we’d face it.
If there was a door, we’d knock on it.
We said yes to the travel.
Yes to the nerves.
Yes to the long drive.
Yes to the possibility of failure.
And most importantly — yes to growth.
And here we are, twelve years later… and Boston became the Nike Boston National Qualifier Event.
What once fit into a single 20-foot truck now fills a semi-trailer heading to the Boston. The same event that once felt overwhelming is now part of our rhythm. The fear that once tried to stop us became the fuel that pushed us forward.
That first Boston tournament wasn’t just a trip — it was a turning point. It was the moment we stopped waiting to feel “ready” and decided to become ready. It was proof that growth lives on the other side of risk.
If you’re standing in front of an opportunity that scares you — good.
That probably means it matters.
You don’t need the perfect timing.
You don’t need all the answers.
You don’t need to feel 100% ready.
You just need the courage to say yes.
Take the risk.
Bet on yourself.
Everything can be figured out.
And the reward — in ways you can’t even imagine yet — will come.
