Why Mindset Matters More Than You Think in Volleyball

Hi, I’m Summer Montabone—and before we dive into building unstoppable confidence and resilience on the court, I want to start with why I’m here.

As a retired pro athlete, certified strength and conditioning specialist, elite performance & mindset coach - and - volleyball & softball mom, I’ve spent years helping female athletes overcome the one thing that quietly holds them back more than anything else: their mindset.

We train hours in the gym. We drill technique until it’s muscle memory. But what about our mental fitness?

Just like our bodies, our minds are muscles that need to be trained. If we only focus on the physical side of the game, we’re leaving a huge piece of performance untapped!

The Perfection Trap

One of the biggest hurdles I see volleyball players face is perfectionism.

We think we need the perfect serve, the perfect set, the perfect game. But striving for perfection often backfires => it creates pressure, self-doubt, and fear of failure.

In reality, growth comes from mistakes. Confidence comes from getting back up, learning, and pushing forward - not from doing everything flawlessly.

This is why I don’t just talk about “mindset.” I call it mental fitness.

What Is Mental Fitness?

Mental fitness is the ability to strengthen your thoughts, focus, and confidence just like you would strengthen your body.

  • Strength training for your mind = learning how to handle pressure.

  • Conditioning for your thoughts = building habits that support confidence.

  • Recovery for your mindset = letting go of mistakes and bouncing back.

When athletes train their minds as seriously as they train their bodies, they stop being shaken by mistakes and start playing with freedom and confidence!
